BS. Where are you getting your info? The CPU does all the work, the HD only stores the info crunched to send back to SETI. I am coming up on my 1st yr anniversary and no problems. My main machine is the G3/300, 6 yrs old and still purring like the day it was new. Just make sure you have a good air flow through the box and everything will be fine. It is the peps that use PowerBooks that burn up your machine, probably because they don't raise it off the table to get air underneath it. I use 1/2" rubber feet and a small desk fan blowing across the unit to cool my PowerBook the fan hardly comes on. My temps never exceed 109�F in my G3.
What happens is when you are processing a work unit, the result from each process is written back to disk. Although the data units are small (about 350kb) your Mac is continually reading / writing the data from the same sector of the disk. Think of it as a bush track. Although there is lots of dirt there, over time the people who walk through there make a groove.... Do you want this to happen to a $200 hard drive?
Now, lets say that data unit is somehow fragmented on your drive. Imagine all the work the drive heads have to do to read / write a data result.
This is why you should set up a ram disk - it saves your hard drive and actually speeds up the process. It is always faster to read / write from ram than it is to a HD. ;)

edit - although I do think distributed computing is a great solution to solving problems, I can't see myself being that dedicated setting up a box fan to cool my computer so I can pump out 300 work units a year....

My mouse (Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v2.0) show far less mouse acceleration in Lion compared to Snow Lion.
I haven't read anything about this so I guess it's something on my end? Or does other people get similar behavior in Lion?

How likely is it that Apple is holding back the groundbreaking new features or GUI changes?
I myself think there won't be any GUI changes from the developer version, but maybe some new features that make people go "wow".
As I am new to the Mac I would like to know what's the experience with previous Mac OS launches. Does Apple wait for the final version with the big changes?

Glad to see they are making improvements finally. I don't think that Mobile Me is worth the fee now that the "Find My iPhone" feature is free. :apple:

I think my biggest concern is having to spend all the time reinstalling my software and if I can avoid that, that MacMini will only be limited to the partition size used on the MBP.

if I remember my stuff (but I could have forgotten A LOT) all higher impedance will do is make it quieter, but that being said is there really that much difference in impedance with headphones? I've got an old pair of AKG K301's and they are similar in volume to the apple earbuds (but obviously lightyears better)

I went for the 32gb 3G in black with the grey smart cover (yes I know I'm boring) let me know whether you have taken the same route and also whether you hear from Apple on shipping. i've just discovered that quicktime seems to have no channels available for streaming. i used to have npr bookmarked in favorites, and when i went to it, it was gone. went to refetch it, and discovered that nothing seems available. sometimes qt says their channels have changed, and i need to update existing software. but when i try, there's nothing there. does anyone know what's going on? :( i don't understand. thanks

Just buy one now. Rumours are pointing towards a Q4 or Q1 2012 release. No point in waiting that long. The iPhone 4 is a great device, get the white one if you want to be different. :D

Perhaps Lion will cost relatively little, such as the Snow Leopard upgrade.
Possible, but highly unlikely. Apple did this before with 10.1 for 10.0 owners (Since 10.1 was what 10.0 shouldve been, and 10.6 is what ideally 10.5 shouldve been) - Id expect it going back to $129, since its a full release instead of an improved Snow Leopard.

If they do announce, and release, at WWDC anyone buying a MBP within a month or two before may also get a discounted price on Lion.
